The University of California at Irvine (zot! zot! zot!) is having an on-line conference next week to discuss their plans to launch a new School of Design. This is not, in their conception, a small endeavor. They have plans (pdf) to start out large and get bigger.
It’s funny: despite having done time in a number of programs during my long undergraduate tenure at UCI (including ICS, drama, Japanese lit, and eventually political science), I probably never would have considered design at the time. But then, design has changed over the last few years. As I find my interests drawn to the intersection of interactive computing, architecture, and visual communication, it seems as though this is the direction I am heading. I’ll be interested to see what questions come up in the conference.
