Somehow, I suspect Missy Elliot is not a regular reader of my blog. Went to Thai Night at the South Campus tonight (thanks for the invite, Annie!). Great food, great performances. And it was those performances (along with the Thai students’ willingness to not get too stuck on classic Thai culture) that brought to mind Miss Elliot.
I am a great fan of Elliot’s videos. Her use of Butoh imagery, her aesthetic sensibilities. (Or the sensibilities of her video director, I suppose.) Meanwhile, the popularity of Indian loops has died down a bit. Why haven’t people been making use of the Thai culture to inform youth culture? I can only imagine it is a matter of time, but it sure seems that a fusion of Thai dancing with modern hip-hop style would yield an interesting dish.
So, Missy, if you’re reading, remember to give me a shout-out in your next video.
