Man v. Shark

Sharkrunners screencapOK, this is just too cool. Sharkrunners is a game set up by the Discovery Channel for people to learn more about sharks. Human players take on the role of captains of virtual research ships, tooling around coastal waters looking to collect data on sharks. The sharks are controlled by–sharks! Yeah, the wii controller is so yesterday, so species-centric. Sharks have been tagged with GPS devices and control their position in the game by, you know, swimming around the ocean. The game is played in persistent real-time, with updates sent to you via email or SMS. (via infoaesth)

Indicating trust with color on Wikipedia

The “wikilab” at UC Santa Cruz (Go Banana Slugs!) has a demo up for a proposed Wiki reputation system. The system looks at a users edits, and the length of time they survive, and decides that those with long-lasting edits are likely to be more trustworthy. It then allows you to visualize the elements of an article that are written by a trustworthy user, by shading the text more heavily if it is more worthy of your trust.

There are definitely things to like about this approach: it makes use of existing behavior to create the measure, for one thing. But after browsing through some of the articles, it’s clear that the function of the text matters at least as much as the content. If you do some of the wiki-gardening, cleaning up and adding the structural cruft that makes up Wikipedia, you are likely to be judged more trustworthy. Likewise, if you write very broad, general connective sections, you are less likely to be objectionable.

Unfortunately, the most important bits of an article–the ones that really are the most trustworthy–may very well be written back and forth for some time before they reach some level of stability. Likewise, a user may stalk some pretty peripheral parts of Wikipedia and never find herself challenged.

In any case, it is certainly an interesting attempt, worth checking out and thinking about. The demo is here. Just hit “random page” a few times to see some examples of the highlighting.

Remaindered Links: Amusingly Creepy Edition

America’s Army ArcadeRemaindered links, the amusingly creepy edition:

* Rats like to be tickled, and laugh when they are.

* Considering a career change? Have a contagious smile? Looks like an old friend is recruiting. I can’t be there, but I think my brother might be in town… I doubt this guy is.

* America’s Army, already a creepy, if fun, idea, is stepping up the creep factor with a an arcade version. The game “includes a significant amount of authentic Army videos and other information designed to immerse the player in the Army culture.” Except, you know, the blood. Because that would be icky. I suggest two improvements. First, you should ask those who get high scores for their home phone numbers, so that a recruiter can call. (Come on, haven’t you been watching any movies?) Second, if they could partner with Diebold, they could come up with a dual use voting/gaming machine! They need to stay ahead of the curve if they want to beat out the rival game-makers.

* Contortionist 50s farm girls singing about potato salad. And some creepy old ads as a side.

* Way old, but: 99 rooms.

* Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The shadow knows?

* Kermy goes necromancer.

* Can you give me a hand with the baby?
