I am frustrated. There are some really interesting conferences and workshops coming up in May, but I am here in Buffalo for graduation. Jamie (my partner) is graduating from law school, and I want to be here for that, and as the director of the MI program, I need to be here to see our graduates off. That means I’m missing some neat conferences.
May 6: New Media Education and Its Discontents, NYC. I think I’m going to make this one. Some of the pedagogical issues range beyond education in art and media departments.
May 14-15: Social Software in the Academy, USC. The first of these was an interesting workshop, and I am looking forward to seeing what comes out of this one. I’m also bummed because there are quite a few people who will probably be there that I have wanted to meet f2f. (Though I may be there “in spirit.”)
May 19-21: Banff New Media Institute invited me to a cool looking summit “Bodies in Play: Shaping and Mapping Mobile Applications.” I don’t find anything on this on the web, so I shall remain mum while they shape their message. Really wish I could make this one.
May 20-22: Online Deliberation 2005, at Stanford. This looks to be amazingly cool, and I have something that fits so nicely, but again, bad timing.
May 26-30: International Communication Association, NYC. I’ve got three papers in this year, but I am second author on all of them (grad students as primary), so I thought seriously about not going. But, it’s an excuse to spend a few days in the city, chat with some folks I haven’t seen for a while, and I didn’t go last year, so I probably will make this one.
