Well, not quite DIY, I suppose, but a bit closer. The BookDrive DIY is a platform for scanning books. Unlike machines that are substantially more expensive, this one makes you turn the page. I wonder how much it costs to hire a page-turner. It seems like highly outsourceable work, but when you don’t DIY, it introduces all kinds of issues in terms of copyright (just try asking Kinkos to photocopy a book for you!).
At shy of $4 grand, without the cameras, this is still not going to be a personal purchase for most people, but it would be nice if a service did this for just a few bucks, like the companies that will do this with your compact disk collection. I’m not sure whether I would be willing to digitize my library for a buck a book, but I might.
