When porn attacks

“Always…never…forget to check your references. I think the kids still like it when I ‘get down’ verbally.” – Real Genius

I’m notorious for not reusing my lecture materials. This semester, I’m so busy that I have to. It’s probably a good thing. But then, last night, I am using the slides I prepared on patents in IT and I’m talking about Amazon’s 1-Click patent. I use Powerpoint — at least I have — and since I provide the slides electronically, I often pepper them with hyperlinks. During the lecture I catch some snickering (more than the usual amount) when talking about 1-click. Fine, I think, it is a pretty preposterous situation.

At the break someone informs me that my link to www.nowebpatents.com might have been perfectly fine a year ago, but now it redirects to lesboerotica.com. At first I thought: I wonder what they must think when they get a five minute spike with forty people hitting their site from a UB computer lab. Then, I realized it probably would be lost in a sea of hits from our campus.

Recently, it seems that at least one student was arrested for downloading child pornography on our campus. Even though he never intended to do so, it turned out that a Kazaa search had brought the porn to his hard drive, and he was therefore in possession of it. I guess the link could have been worse.

Lesson of the day: it is important to familiarize yourself with your slides before you lecture, and also to check those links…
