Just shuffled back to B-lo. No time for real postings, so, here’s what I might have talked about:

    I was only a “total geek” =)

I too was only a “total geek” and I got the extra points for being a female. Girls should get extra points for everything.

Being that the author is (obviously) a geek of the highest order, do you think the extra points for females is a pathetic attempt to get a date?

Also, thank-you for the toilet paper poetry, now *that* was funny.

I only have “geekish tendencies.” But that’s probably only because that test was all about computers and star trek/wars. If it was about TV shows or the 1980s, I would be the biggest geek to take the test :)

I myself managed to be a “major geek,” although so borderline that had I been female (just for a test) I’d be a “super geek” (Look up in the sky! It’s a Linux penguin! It’s a set of parallel planes! It’s…Supergeek!).

But I note that, as Jenn points out, the test is heavily biased towards computer and tech-tv geeks, with only a few culture-geek or social-science-geek questions overall. Maybe the gap is there for us to fill? What questions would you put on the Cyberstudies/Media Geek test? How about:

    – Have you ever had to stop someone mid-conversation to explain the concept of Maslow’s pyramid?
    – Do you own a record player? A record player that plays 78s? More records than CDs? Eight track tapes? An eight track player?
    – Have you ever tried to fix your scanner/camera/toaster/other? Have you ever been successful despite never having seen the inside of one before?
    – Have you used the term “wetware?” Sneakernet? More than 5x? More than 5x a month?

Even better, how about “cyberpunkish tendencies”:

    – Ever forget which personae you were using?
    – Do words of Asian origin make up more than 10% of your vocabulary?
    – Do you thrash any form of transportation-related board?
    – Have you ever attached a motor where there wasn’t one before?
    – How many actuators or keypads do you have hanging around “in case”?
    – Similarly, do you rescue parts from dead electronics in case they might be of use later?
    – Is more than 20% of your wardrobe made up of materials that require TM after the name (void if you spend more than 20% of your time outside of urban or suburban environments)?
    – Have you ever piloted a vehicle of any sort at > 150 MPH?
    – Did you think The Matrix was a documentary?
    – Did you already have several favorite aidoru before Gibson came out with his book?
    – Do you often refer to your portable computer as a “deck”?
    – Do you know kung fu?
    – Do you find the fact that there is now a chain store in the malls called “rave girl” more than slightly ironic?
    – Do you wonder if you are a sleeping butterfly?
    – Do you wonder if the previous question isn’t better for a “How taoist are you?” quiz?
    – Do you remember when there was no word for cracking (i.e., breaking into computers)?
    – What *wouldn’t* you transplant?
    – Are you nomadic?
    – Are you worried this might be a Turing test?

Wait…you mean this ISN’T a turing test? You guys really exist? Soylent web is people?

    Uh oh…

Seriously, the cyberpunk test is solid. I’d add something about Neil Stephenson, maybe Spider Robinson. Of course, ultimately, there is no cyberpunk test…

The geek test didn’t have anything about statistics. (I don’t mean stats about their results, but doing stats things as a geeky thing.) I think staying up late to figure out some stats issues is pretty geeky.
