Overlooked 1990s films

Looking over the Top 100 Overlooked films list, I find very few I, um, overlooked. I probably just watch too many movies. Of that list, there were only a handful I haven’t seen, but there were a number that I count among my own favorites; which, if you also overlooked them, you should think about renting:

* Miller’s Crossing
* The Hudsucker Proxy
* Bound
* Chungking Express
* Ghost Dog
* Sneakers
* The Red Violin
* Jacob’s Ladder
* The Spanish Prisoner
* Beautiful Girls (now in heavy TV rotation)
* Richard III
* Strange Days
* LA Story
* The Limey
* Raise the Red Lantern
* Exotica
* Sonatine
* Bullet in the Head
* Fast, Cheap & Out of Control
* Chaplin

You find in there a predilection for ultra-violence, Steve Martin, and (strangely) good use of color in the cinematography — especially red. But where is Léon on this list?

Then there were a bunch I wish I had overlooked (Very Bad Things [AKA Very Bad Movie], Defending Your Life, Bringing Out the Dead, Topsy-Turvy), and a number of odd choices, in my most humble opinion. (via Tryon)

    I’ve overlooked all of them except Raise the Red Lantern. Good, sad movie.

    Everyone should see Together – a funny, touching film about life in a Swedish commune in the 1970s. Some very good films in that list I thought too – Truly. Madly, Deeply and Raise the Red Lantern among them.

    I know this is a little off, but when starting a new list on most overlooked films in 2000, one should add “Equilibrium” to the mix. It debut during the first Matrix movie and was missed by many. In the vein of 1984 and Blade Runner, this is my one of all-time favorites! Check out the incredible moves which combine guns (instead of swords) with martial arts… They call it “Gun-Katta”.

    Kevin: To each his own, but I have to say, I thought Equilibrium was thoroughly forgettable. It felt a lot like Gattaca-light to me. The Matrix, on the ther hand, remains in my top 10.

    David: A bunch of people have told me to see Together, but it’s hard to find in the US. (Er, by which I mean, not on Netflix. And unlike Seattle or SoCal, there aren’t a lot of shops here that rent outside of the Blockbuster mold.)
