Overheard: MySpace

I was on the train in Connecticut today, early in the morning, and four girls in private school uniforms (looked to be about 14 or 15) were sitting next to me.

Girl 1. Yeah, after the TV show [Dateline special on child sexual predators] everyone’s parents just went crazy: “Do you have a Myspace? Do you chat online?”

Girl 2. I don’t do MySpace, I would rather play games.

Girl 3. Yeah, you just get a lot of comments about how your picture is hot.

Girl 1. I don’t have any hot pictures.

Girl 3. Some creepy guy is going to think they are hot anyway.

Girl 4. All I have on MySpace is like “Hi, I’m [deleted].” Oh, and it says I’m 21 from California.

Girl 1. Mine says I’m 99.

Girl 2. Myspace used to be cool, when everyone put up new pictures. Now everything is old, and it just takes up time and is boring. I was so bored I did my homework instead.

Note to advertisers: when students opt to do their homework instead of using your service, you might not be around all that long.

Facebook seems to be doing fantastic. In the January 27 issue of “The Chronicle of Higher Education”, there is an article on how Facebook is single-handedly destroying the idea of “high-tech” classrooms.

Haha, but is MySpace doing anything different from other blog sites? Perhaps everyone’s tired of this blogging business and the only people left doing it are the A-listers (for ego-casting) and those doing it for themselves.

I thought you might be interested in this info regarding the development of the Buffalo Waterfront.

If Gaylord Entertainment owns 26.6% of BassPro, what have they said of their plans for expansion into Buffalo? Why hasn’t anyone asked the Vice President, Treasure and Investor Relations Head, Ken Foster? Maybe you, can pose the question. His telephone number is 615 316-6132.

Gaylord Entertainment trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the call letters GED.

I only want the best for our city, and am concerned, that this might just be another whitewash attempt.

I read the Buffalo News Daily from here in Florida and check the WBEN website for updates. I would like to be able to return this spring with a feeling of hope for Buffalo.

i learned of your blog site today in the Buffalo News. It seems insane to put up 60 million dollars to lure a company, Bass Pro, that’s not coming here. If the company Gaylord Entertainment is new to you, brother don’t be surprised, it’s never been mentioned in the news.

Memphis is receiving a Bass Pro site with no money.

This whole project has not been defined.

    A bit off-topic, but…

I’ve found the whole “Bass Pro” thing to be ridiculously overblown. If you want to develop the waterfront, find a developer, don’t pin your hopes on a single store. Tastes change in the retail market, and basing your development on any retail, let alone a single store, is just dumb, dumb, dumb.

A vibrant downtown and vibrant waterfront, good (efficient) city services, strong educational and medical resources–all of these things attract business and business creates real jobs. No one I’ve talked to seems to understand why a “Buffalo-Bass Pro Partnership” makes any sense at all.
