Of Erdosing

Given that I am now the #1 hit for “self-googling” it makes sense that I would also want to acquire a lower Erdos number. My current number is infinity. Luckily, 5 is for sale on ebay. I’m less interested in the Erdos number than I am in the idea of selling collaboration. So, of course I bid :). (via CT)

Through a bit of a fluke — wrote an article on “online scholarly communication” with a mathematician at my school — I have an Erdos of 4 (i.e., he (3) wrote a paper with RICHMOND, LAWRENCE BRUCE (2), who wrote a paper with Erdos in 1976). Cool, eh? Although before you get too puffed, you have to read the listing about the horse with an Erdos of 3, and the 4 year old with an Erdos of 4…

Hey, I miscalculated. Paul Erdos is officially “0” and not 1, so that means that RICHMOND, LAWRENCE BRUCE is a 1 and Jonathan is a 2, so that makes me a 3. Hey hey hey…

Oh, man, now I really feel out of it. Let me know if you want to write something together :). Or better yet, sell yourself on ebay! There is something to this selling collaboration that could be worked into an interesting critique of market-orientation in academia. How is selling your Erdos number all that different from being promoted based largely on the size of the grants you bring in?
