[MITIA] First Assignment

Update (9/7): I’ve noted this in the comments, but since some are missing it there, I’ll put it here. Orkut isn’t working. It’s moving way too slow, and many people haven’t received the invites I sent last Thursday. Soooooo.

When we look at social networks in a couple of weeks, I’m going to ask you to sign up with Tribe.net. If you want to get ahead of the curve, I would recommend you do that now. However, the actual assignment/deadline won’t be for a while, so… Peoples of the world, RELAX….

–1. You should have received an email inviting you to join Orkut. You should accept that invite! If for some reason it gets to be Friday and you don’t have an invite, you should email me and let me know. Be prepared to answer a lot of personal questions. Feel free to lie if you don’t want to answer.

2. But, please upload a picture that looks enough like you that when I see you in the hall I have some hope of knowing who you are. I probably still won’t acknowledge you, because I tend to walk the halls thinking deep thoughts, oblivious to the world around me. Yet, there remains that remote possibility. So, at least to start with, upload a picture that remotely resembles your imagined twin.

3. Get the software to use AOL Instant Messenger. It can be downloaded at the AIM site, or you may already have the client software installed. If you have an address you want to keep semi-private (always a good idea), make a new account to use for the class. Enter this AIM account in your profile so I can -bug you at any hour of the day- know who you are if and when we do group chats.

4. Join the MITIA group.

5. Peruse the people in the class. “Friend” (yup, verbification) those whom you know. Think about who would make a good person for your group — i.e., who is interesting, charming, writes well, has mad skillz?

6. Congratulations! You have beat the monster. Move on to Second Assignment.

What, still here? Encountered difficulties we did, yes? Post them as a comment!–

    A couple of potential difficulties.

First, Orkut is running very slow, taking as long as 30 seconds to load a page. This is why I was considering alternatives, but hopefully Orkut can last long enough to help us out.

Second, UB has cut off access to the class lists for some reason, meaning that I only got about 8 invites out. I’ll keep checking throughout the day. Or if you send me your name & email, I’ll send out an invite.

    Thanks!

    Deadline: Tuesday, September 7.

Please try to take care of this sooner if at all possible. But I know it’s a long weekend.

    Death of Assignment #1

It seems that Orkut is not sending out the invites, or at least that’s the best I can surmise. Only one person has joined the MITIA group, and she was already on Orkut!

I tried to think of an alternative to this — and there is one — but I don’t think it’s fair or likely to get everyone over to another network by Wednesday night.

We will come back to this when we talk about such social networking systems and how they work (Or don’t!), in a few weeks. If you want to get a head start, you can head over to Tribe.net and sign up. You don’t need an invite. You’ll find a community there called MITIA as well, and you can “friend” me.

This isn’t the first time I’ve used a blog, at least I don’t think so. Although I’m not sure whether or not something like Live Journal would classify as one, it seems that it would because it is the same basic idea.

I usually try to spend as much time away from the computer as I can because once I get sucked into these things I can never stop. Be it AIM or Live Journal, or what have you. My old Live Journal, which is now in the final throes of death, gained some notoriet in it’s hey day. I used the format of the Live Journal to write a first person account by Jesus giving a glimpse into his teenage years which for some reason will forever remain a mystery to the world due to the censorship of the Church. I thought it was interesting, and although much of the subject matter offended many, the majority who visited the journal raved.

This particular blog is much different in that it is straightforward and covers various interests. Having just seen Garden State the other day, I found myself caught by the reviews on this Blog. Comparisons to The Graduate abound, its plain and simple, a great movie. Not many artists are successful when trying to capture the pains of young adullthood. Who would have known the guy from Scrubs could pull it off so well.

Now that I am completely off subject though, I will just say that the material on this blog is very enjoyable and is a perfect example of what was discussed in class last week. With the large amount of responses I can already tell that this is going to be a very interesting class.

I wrote out a review of the blog but it didn’t appear, just wondering how long they take to post. I’m assuming the results are not immediate.

Well, this is my first time blogging anything, or ever hearing the word blog in my life. The extensive amount of blogs out in the WWW is so overwhelming! But while sifting through the rubble I came across a blog posted by a man, about middle-age with glasses posts his thoughts and observations on life and experiences that he finds interesting enough to share with th e rest of us. There are a few stories on this blog ramging from his thoughts on the questionable advertising techniques of the toilet paper company, to positive experiences at hotel stays. But the one story that made me think this might be worth YOUR time to check out is the cute and relatable story entilted “One Man’s Trash is Another Man’s Treasure.” In his repeat attempts to throw out an old trash can for the garbagemen/women to pick up, I felt a sense of empathy. I feel that this story really, maybe unkknowingly, represents that the rules of society many times conflict with the rules of common sesnse. This story does end on an ironic, and very cute note also, but I will let you see for yourself if you so desire!
