I am not (as) alone

Couple of recent papers are intriguing in that they fall squarely into areas of particular interest for me.

The first is a paper that will be appearing in the proceedings for CHI 04 called Slash(dot) and Burn: Distributed Moderation in a Large Online Conversation Space. Since my dissertation (“pdf”:http://alex.halavais.net/research/diss.pdf) dealt a little bit with the moderation system on Slashdot, I read this with interest. As I’ve already noted “elsewhere”:http://lackaff.net/archives/2004/1/31/piling-it-on-moderations-that-is/, I think there are some minor problems with the paper, but overall, it’s an interesting overview.

The second paper — which is not yet available — is titled Implicit Structure and the Dynamics of Blogspace:http://www.hpl.hp.com/shl/papers/blogs/index.html. The full paper is unfortunately unavailble, but there is a demo at the site. I had a feeling someone was doing a lot better work on this than I was. (I had cobbled together some of my work for HICSS last year–“Tracking Ideas in the Blogosphere” [“pdf”:http://alex.halavais.net/research/halavais-hicss04.pdf]–but withdrew it.) Although I don’t find it on that page, I think they, like the Googlearchy folks [“pdf”:http://www.princeton.edu/~mhindman/googlearchy–hindman.pdf], made use of a support vector machine classifier, a technique I need to read up on these things, and how they can be used for text categorization. (Perhaps I can start with “Text Categorization with Support Vector Machines: Learning with Many Relevant Features” [“pdf”:http://www.cs.cornell.edu/People/tj/publications/joachims_98a.pdf])

Alex, in your “would be HICSS” paper you mention that it’s a report about work in progress. I’m curious to know how far and where is your research since then…

Lilia: It hasn’t :). The paper gave me a chance to delve a bit into the Information Retreival literature, and it was valuable for me as a learning experience, but frankly the “Blog Epidemic Analyzer” (no link offhand, but you know what I mean) beat me to it. I’m moving in a bit of a different direction, related more to my “Stars and Friends” work many moons ago.
