Host Search

You know, like Star Search. I’ve been pretty happy with my cheap-but-reliable hosting company, ICDSoft. But their service has not scaled with my traffic. I am going to have to move up in plans with them, but frankly, they seem slow. I haven’t really surveyed, and no doubt I could have a faster loading design (in all my spare time), but for now, I am considering moving.

I need: MySQL, all the “P” languages, demonstrated uptime, a gig of space, speediness. And it all needs to be really, really cheap. My primary target is Dreamhost. Does anyone have horrible stories about Dreamhost?

(Oh, do you love Dreamhost? I guess I might kinda-care. But given the aggressiveness of their affiliate program, it’s only kinda. As in: If-I-already-know-you-and-don’t-think-you-are-just-referring-them-for-a-buck kinda caring. On the other hand, I trust horror stories from just about anyone…)

For most hosts you can find almost an equal number of host lovers and those with bad experiences. The last time I shopped around. I made use of the WebhostTalk forums (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/) to check up on a few, and ended up selecting one where the CEO spent time answering questions at WHF (I have used Site5 with no problems for a few years, but have a colleague I referred there who runs into email issues a lot…) Good luck, flip a coin…

Heh. I’m using ICDSoft. And I’ve nothad HUGE problems with their service, although when you want MORE, like multiple MySQL databases or even just a chron program, they aren’t very flexible.

Okay, I’ll bite: I love Dreamhost. I’d had a series of nightmares with my last hosting provider, where servers crashed pretty much daily, and where (this will be shocking, given the daily crashes) they actually went out of business with less than 30 days notice. By contrast, Dreamhost has, in the last nine months, had two brief outages, each accompanied by speedy and unsolicited information about the nature of the downtime; they’ve regularly upgraded any and all software, as needed (and they have an explicitly stated willingness to add or upgrade any perl module you need); and — most importantly for me — they’ve first doubled and then tripled both my disk space and my bandwidth, without an increase in hosting fees. So, yeah, I love them. And I’d love them even without the referral fees (of which I’ve never gotten any, incidentally).

Try Warped.com; I’ve found them very affordable and very willing to assist their customers.

i use dreamhost, the only issue i had was that i had to install an updated python for one thing, but that took all of 20 minutes to do. the only other thing is that they don’t natively support ruby on rails yet…. but they say they will when it is stable. i have the 20 dollar a month plan and there is probably no way i’ll ever come close to needing more.

I use Dreamhost and have for years. Love ’em. I think they could be a tad bit fast, and MT rebuilds run a little slowly (that won’t be an issue for you), but their service and style more than make up for it. They’re quite permissive in terms of features, installing new Perl modules, etc. I really couldn’t ask for anything more.

I’ve been happy with both Dreamhost and TextDrive for rails hosting. I’ve also heard good things about HostGator. Should you go with Dreamhost, use the DREAMRAILS promo code…saves $97 on the yearly plans.
