DAPRA has sponsored a competition for self-driving vehicles that takes them through a 250 mile desert track. The prize is $1,000,000, though most of the teams are spending far more than that on the project. What would be cool is if there were an underdog: a team that was doing it with an old VW Bus and some pretty dumb software. Doesn’t seem to be much of a chance there.
It doesn’t make clear if this is wheel-to-wheel racing. If it were, and if anti-vehicle weapons (*cough* flame thrower) were allowed, it would make for much more interesting watching. They might even attract some of the folks out of SRL, though I somehow doubt it.
