Did they roll Dune Messiah into Children of Dune? Thats the short book after Dune that deals with the Empire in the beginning. Where all the plots to kill Muad’dib come to a climax with his blinding. All in all I thought it was a pretty good telling. Although I am a little more forgiving about the first movie.

I’ve found a lot of people seem to have liked the Lynch version, which I’m a little surprised by. Maybe I’ll rent it to see whether a decade has changed my mind.

A director’s cut was, according to a rumor from Boris (who, given the amount of stuff he surreptitiously puts on the web, really should have a blog), televised in Japan, but I can’t find any corroboration of this. (To the contrary, it seems we are stuck with the original cut.) Lynch abhorred the TV miniseries that was cut from his film.

I think my problem with the original is that while it was stylistically a good match for the book, it lost a lot of the structure that made it interesting. Now, of course, to cut any novel down to film length requires serious abridging, but the product–IMHO–was too confusing to be interesting, and missed out on the many interesting elements in the book.
