Changes afoot: RSS

Most of my loyal readers are reading this through a feed. I’ve been slowly engaging in a bit of improvement of the site–something that has been on the drawing board for a year, at least. To be more accurate, I am undesigning the site. So stop by when you get the chance.

More to the point, I’m going to be chanelling my RSS feed through Feedburner [link fixed] from now on. I’ll be setting up the existing feeds to redirect to this new feed. If I do it right, you shouldn’t notice too much of a difference. But if things seem to be a bit funky with the feeds, you’ll know why.

    I switched earlier after looking through your “undesign”. The floating book looks great, illogical but pretty. That’s unless it’s a book tossed onto the floor… :P Feedburner’s a good idea, especially for tracking readership and if you ever decide to change your blog server for any reason.

    David: Yes, doing this little-by-little. Still to come (no promises if or when):

    * bio
    * stats; or status, I’m not sure. It’s what I’m up to: listening to, reading, etc.
    * cv
    * aggregator
    * find (search, archives, etc.)

    I think that’s it.

    I just switched to the feedburner feed anyway because when I clicked on your blog name it still went to the news subdirectory, and then I got a 404. Could you do a redirect there? Also, on the main page, the first post title and date is a little hard to read over top of the book. Then, on this page, the previous post link is also over top of the book and more difficult to read. I’m on an old iBook (max resolution 800×600) so it could just be a small problem for the majority of people. I really do like the font you chose for the post text.

    Marcia: Thank you very much for the helpful comments. It used to be that /news was mirroring / but… I’ve also switched over to permalinks using mod-rewrite, so I have to figure out how to get mod-rewrite to work with the symolic links (or to strip out the “news”). That should certainly be doable, though I’m new to mod-rewrite.

    Yes, I noticed that it breaks at <1000 pixels wide. There’s a lot of discussion out there as to whether to leave behind the 800px standard. I didn’t intentionally, but when it was done, I noticed the problem. I’ll play with changing it to a percentage rather than a fixed pixel center column, and that may help. Ooo! Or if I put a fixed width column on the left, that should stop them from cramming together. As I add items to the menu bar, they are going to end up overwriting the title on 800px wide screens, but I don’t see a way around that, without serious gymnastics.

    I’m glad you like the font! I haven’t had a chance to look at it in various browsers and platforms yet, but I tried to pick some interesting and commonly installed fonts. Namely:

    font-family: ‘New York’, Palatino, ‘Century Gothic’, ‘Trebuchet MS’, Verdana, Arial, Sans-Serif;

    I’ll try to make those changes when I get the chance. -A
