Category icons?

What do you think about those icons up in the upper right left [now]? They link to categories. I’m going to leave them for a few days, I think, while I decide. Right now, I’m thinking 3 words: “clutter” & “mystery meat.” Maybe they’ll grow on me.

    Cool, I like them.

I think they might work better if they were directly to the left (or even right) of the headings, rather than on the right margin. It’s harder to associate them with the entries, which is what causes the sense of clutter (IMNSHO).

Wow, that was quick. :-) I like it much better.

Ah, you probably caught me in the middle. I like it much better as well: thanks for the advice. I guess I’ve not officially run out of things to do other than grade and finish a paper :(.

A friend suggested that I make the switch from Greymatter to Moveable Type – the whole “category” thing makes me like MT even more, but I keep telling myself if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. We’ll see how long that lasts :)

b2 has categories and is super easy to install. It sets up all the database stuff for you (which I remember you mentioning scared you away from MT).

I haven’t had enough experience with others to really be the best advocate for MT, but I found it exceptionally easy to set up, easy to play with, and with a pretty wide user-base (meaning it will continue to be updated, etc.). Since I don’t have anything to compare it with, I can’t really rank it there. I can say that the installation was not difficult. Basically, make the usual script changes, upload the files, and tell it to install itself.

Oh, and MT will run on your SQL database if you want, but doesn’t need it. Right now, I have only a single SQL database for my hosting, so I’m leaving it free for other projects: i.e., MT is using a built-in perl module for its database operations–no setup involved.

I just walked 22 undergrad students through MT installs in class, with great success. Using the Berkeley DB support because there’s no MySQL support on the server that the students have access to, but the instructions are pretty clear for both types of support.

I really like the MT environment–from categories to trackbacks to great CSS support to the customizable templates.
