Blackout

Seems there is a major blackout across the region. We had a slight brownout at the university, but then were fine. But it seems like much of New York, Detroit, and parts of Canada are out. That might explain some absent web pages I’ve tried to hit :). (CNN.com – Major power outage hits New York, other large cities – Aug. 14, 2003)

it didn’t make it this far south, but many universities, like vt, seem to have their own power plants, don’t they?

That was my immediate thought, but had they switched to local power I would have expected to see rationing. Instead, air conditioners continued to blow. As it turns out, several parts of Buffalo were fine, while others took until midnight or later to come back up.

We had to drive cross-town to pick up dog food from one of the places that was open around 8:30, and it seemed every other traffic signal was out. There were even cases of single houses on a block being out while the rest of the block was fine. It’s a strange city that way, with the power grid having grown organically, I suspect, over years of expansion and contraction.

Today, the university has shut off air conditioners and asked for voluntary rationing of electricity. So I’m at home :).
