Big Brother Eyes

You may notice some weirdness around here while I monkey with the blog, making it (as always) simpler.

My original plan was a picture of my eyes like this (click for full size):

Watching eyes design

But my design critic / spouse rejected it as “super creepy,” so I’m back to the drawing board.

Turns out, she may have been right. Images of even abstract “eye spots” tend to cause people to be more honest, accoding to an article in the New Scientist.

For a while, I had watching eyes show up on the overhead projector periodically during exams. I got reports back about being “creeped out,” but maybe it led to less cheating?

It doesn’t look like you at all!!!

Heh. I originally did it with my glasses on, but my perscription is so strong it makes me look like I have tiny eyes, and large dents in the sides of my head. I never really realized, until now, how different I look without glasses on. Also, without the context of the face, people’s eyes alone always look a little strange.

Good idea. If I’m giving an exam next time, I’ll try projecting a looping video of my eyes looking left and right :P

That’s what this one did :). It was an animated gif, and every 45 seconds or so, it would glance to the left or to the right. So it looked like a static picture, but it moved now and again.

I’ve been working on my site too, mostly the new URL — which is why I’m slow to respond to your Slate post.

It was an interesting evening indeed. What did you think of Slate’s new design that launched the next day?

Something is not loading correctly with the new loook! It hangs with
(1 item remaining) opening page http://alex.halavais.net/… message at the bottom left corner when using IE

Epa: I checked it in IE6, and it seems OK. I got the same “1 item remaining” for a while, but it eventually finished. I have a feeling it is the embed from You Tube slowing things down a bit.

David: On Slate’s look… is wrong that I liked it better before? It looks like CNN now.

What’s happened to categories of your blogs? I would say that it was very useful

Epa: I think I need to reorganize those categories. They are still there (e.g., you can click on “Site” above and get other site-related posts), they just aren’t on the side bar. That is, there is no side bar. I’m pretty committed to not having the side bar, but I may have the categories appear on another page. (If I do have a side bar, it will be only “recent comments.”)
