All Your Base

With Analytics finally (you know, 24 hours is a lot of internet time) working for most people, Google is now pushing About Google Base, what seems to be a way of archiving semi-structured data.

My first reaction, as with several Google initiatives, is that it’s a few more eggs for the same basket. What happens when all my email, all my analytics, and now all my recipes are destroyed in a (not-so-)freak power outage at Google HQ. Yes, yes, I know. Google has distributed servers up the wazoo, and this could never happen. And besides, they don’t archive all human knowledge… yet.

On the plus side, they are enabling uploading via RDF (RSS), which means that building an alternative wouldn’t be difficult, just redundant,

I don’t know that Base is a leap forward, but it does provide yet another public resource. And once again makes you wonder whether Google’s contribution to the commonweal imply reciprocity at some point. Should we beware of geeks bearing gifts?
