what a ball of crap. I’m so very tired of a sound bite in place of action; a slogan in place of a decision; a fiction in place of reality. my students are good people. they don’t want to do bad things. but we have been socialized into such a delusional sense of reliance on the institutionalization of experience that I do not think we’re even capable of imagining an alternative that would be meaningful. I say we because I don’t blame them. They just live in the world we created.

I don’t blame them. I think the whole “blaming” thing is a little over-rated. But I do value a sound-bit that engages the listener, that pulls them out of their everyday existence and makes them re-evaluate their world. I think that is a good thing, and that hand-wringing about inaction is not.

It’s not an either/or. Action does not occur without thought, and encouraging thought–however it may be done–is a worthwhile endeavor, I think. Words matter.

I agree with Alex. It has been said a lot in recent years, especially now with the whole “words” debate controversy of the current election, that words are meaningless without action. That’s only half true though. Without words we would have no way of communicating the way that we should act or what actions should be taken. If there is any message out there that can give our nation some sense of passion and communal interest I think it is worth it.

There are lots of ways to deal with the nihilistic and apathetic view that americans view the world, and our place in it. These people are just using what they know. If you are an action person then that what they are doing is calling you to action. Some people are wired to be mouthpieces calling for reevaluation
