21st century courtship?

Am I just out of touch, or is this a very strange kind of dating:

My name is Dave. I’m a twenty nine year old professional card player, living in the United States. I’m white, I don’t have any children or STDs. I don’t smoke cigarettes, but I do smoke marijuana sometimes. I drink alcohol, and occasionally take drugs when I party. I can get you an easy, normal job, with benefits, that pays $50,000 a year in four weeks. I have a car, and an apartment. You: a single female, age 18 to 27, no children, no STDs, not fat, not wanted by law enforcement [no warrants except traffic], race does not matter, willing to travel. You have an upbeat personality, are willing to try new things, are fun to be around, or at least wiling to try to be fun around, and are generally not usually described as “a real downer”, an “asshole” or “bitch”, and you are not a thief or at least promise not to steal from ME

[…]

Here is what I propose. I live on the East Coast, I’ll fly you from wherever you are right now. Come visit me for a few days, see if we hit it off. If we do, move in here, and I’ll teach you how to deal poker. During the time while we’re waiting for your license to come through, clean my apartment up, and do the dishes. I’ll pay the rent, food, restaurant tabs, night club door fees ect.. Couple months go by, you’re making $1200 a week, get your own place and then face me as your friend and we’ll see what’s what.

Maybe my perspective is tweaked, given that I just taught a class on how people become enslaved by answering ads not unlike this one. But maybe this is just a natural outgrowth of online dating, which I still find to be odd. I was talking with a journalist yesterday who told me of a guy who checks on other potential dates on his PDA while out on a date. Ah, romance.

wasn’t thinking ‘slavery’ as much as this guy is a poker pimp. Must be the new pimping thing.

Nah, Dave is just a fuckup. Doesn’t matter whether this is the Information Age or what.

As I was reading, I was thinking, “eep! prostitution!…. eep! slavery…. huh? poker???” But having tried online dating (rather unsuccessfully), I have to say that I’m far from sure it’s a “natural outgrowth” of that. More like a perversion. (not that online dating is not a perversion of dating in itself).
