Falling apart

Wednesday, March 18th, 1998

Just dropped Jamie off for work. I’m meeting Nav at eight to make changes to the calendar. I ditched work over the last week to try to get some stuff done for school. I got a bunch of calls from a seemingly panicked Nav saying, in essence, that the office was falling apart without me. I wasn’t going to come in yesterday, but they were really insistent. When I did get in, it turned out there really wasn’t that much I could help with. However, I talked to Gary about the new pressures at school, and the need to spend time on my thesis. He was pushing me to instead take on a regular full-time schedule with the city, but that just isn’t going to be possible if I want to finish my thesis, take classes, and teach. I’ve agreed to work full time during the summer (starting 15 June), but we’ll play it by ear from there.

As for the thesis, I’m seriously considering changing it to include only education sites. I’ll make a final decision about this by tomorrow. It might make the literature review a bit easier, but it would mean finding a new way of sampling. This might not be such a bad idea, in any event. It would also mean doing a lot of extra work for the IAMCR paper, and not really being able to use the data collected for Tony’s class.

Things look OK financially. Pottery Barn is courting Jamie for their new downtown store. Assuming I get the thesis completed within the next six weeks (I better!), I should be doing OK for the summer. Basically, I can predict my income for the next couple of years, and while it is not a great income, it is stable.

We picked up a pump and water bottle for the bike. Now that the weather is getting a little better, I should be able to ride to school on a regular basis. Maybe I can even do some of those nice long rides I used to make in Japan. Any way I go, I doubt I’ll be able to go to Glasgow without getting suit that will fit my girth. The goal is to get in strong enough shape on the bike that I can make the long commute around the north end of the lake to Bellevue in June.

Mr. Nice Guy

I’m writing in my journal and will then get to sleep. Jamie is watching “The Profiler” on TV—a show I don’t much care for. Good day today; a bit of exercise and I felt energized through much of the day.

Wanted to take “Philosophy of Education” next quarter, but I got a note from John requesting that I take his 586. I’m going to meet with him on Monday to flesh out some of the paperwork. Which means that I’d better finish that work this weekend. Also need to talk to STAR tomorrow to see if any good classes are still available.

The thesis has been daunting, to say the least. But if I treat it as nothing more (!) than four or five term papers, ten weeks seems to be a reasonable time frame in which to complete it. I should have a complete timetable by Monday.

Went to see Mr. Nice Guy today. Jackie Chan kicks ass!
